THE SPINE: YOUR BODIES NETWORK CONNECTION

Spine Health is something that you may overlook when it comes to good health, but you might want to consider it a part of your routine maintenance – just like visiting the dentist twice a year - for long-term health support and dis-ease prevention.

The spine not only supports the body, but it also houses all the nerves that send messages across our entire body, from the brain down to the large intestine and every other organ in between. Think of your brain like the command center and the spine as its messenger. All of the human body's functions (thought processes, movements, speech, sensations etc.) are controlled and coordinated by the brain & spine's neural network (aka the Central Nervous System). If something is misaligned or blocked, it can cause all kinds of illnesses and issues, from neurological disorders to digestive problems.

Spinal manipulation techniques date back to the time of Hippocrates. Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, believed in nature's healing power and the body’s natural ability to heal itself. He also believed that if the spine was misaligned, it significantly contributed to an individual's dis-ease.

Dr. Phil Convertino, a Holistic Physician and Doctor of Chiropractic, explains that chiropractic care is an overall way of looking at the human body. It is based on the idea that the body is self-sustaining and self-healing, and by removing imbalances (both structural and postural), you allow the body to heal itself. For this to happen, the network of nerves and signals from your brain, down your spinal cord, to the network of nerves must be allowed to flow freely without interruption. Chiropractors can remove these interruptions and allow the body to heal.

There are several techniques a chiropractor can use, but Directional Non-Force Technique, aka D.N.F.T, is a gentle, low force method of chiropractic developed by Dr. Richard Vanrumpt in 1923. This is the same method Dr. Phil uses in his practice. There is no cracking or popping involved. Instead, D.N.F.T is a very safe procedure that identifies ‘subluxations’ (aka vertebrae misalignments) through leg reflex checks. Once the misalignments are identified and marked, a thumb thrust is applied, and muscles are adjusted, correcting vertebrae, discs, and clearing the way for messages to be delivered. Another benefit of the non-force technique is that the results are long-lasting and require fewer visits than conventional chiropractic.

A spinal assessment and adjustment through D.N.F.T. is an excellent approach to maintaining the body naturally. Re-aligning your spine, and removing nerve interference, can help you recover from trauma such as car accidents or sports injuries but can also address the root cause of many health problems, including digestive issues, allergies, headaches, fatigue, and depression, by removing blockages and allowing the body to achieve internal balance and heal itself naturally.

Dr. Phil recommends a patient come in at least twice a year for a regular check-up, ideally the month before your birthday and again six months later. He explains that the human body has seven biological cycles during the year, each consisting of 52 days - no different from the cycles you see in nature and the entire plant and animal kingdom. During your last cycle, right before your birthday, your body is in a development phase where your body produces millions of new cells and sheds dead cells. As your body is getting rid of the dead cells, it is looking for a place to unload, making you feel a little more cranky or irritable (similar to a woman’s monthly menstrual cycle), so the body needs more rest. I have heard some healers refer to this time before your birthday as your “low ebb.” It is a time to lay low and clean up any unfinished business, cleanse your body, and reflect. It is not a time to start anything new, and as seasons go on, people see the value in an adjustment during this time.
